Introduction to Sur-Ron Electric Bikes

Sur-Ron bikes are electric, literally. They are a range of electric motorbikes, not to be confused with other e-bikes that we’ve reviewed. These are road legal motorbikes and off-road dirt bikes that are stunning to look at and breath-taking to ride.

A range of electric bikes that are stunning to look at and breath-taking to ride

Motorcycle enthusiasts have been torn between the thrill of riding a powerful petrol-fuelled bike and the impact on the environment in recent years but the rapid development of the eco-bike, driven by an electric motor, have rocketed these two-wheel vehicles to popularity, and Sur-Ron are at the forefront of this growth.

Sur-Ron electric bikes are powerful beasts, built with a robust frame and eye-catching designs. They range from the road legal Light Bee L1E, the off-road Light Bee X, the Light Bee S aimed at kids and youth aged 10 years and above (off-road of course) to the fully fledged off-road electric dirt bikes with double the torque, triple the power and huge bags of fun that are the Ultra Bee and Storm Bee electric bikes.

Let’s delve into the specifications of each Sur-Ron bike [btw it’s Sur-Ron rather than Surron].

Sur-Ron Bike Peak Power & Speed

Starting with peak power output, the entry-level Sur-Ron bikes; Light Bee L1E, Light Bee X and Light Bee S, deliver 6,000W, making them well below the L3e-A1 motorbike classification threshold in the US, which allows upto 11,000W.

You will need a CBT licence to ride the Light Bee L1E on UK roads as this is the road legal version from Sur-Ron. There’s an excellent write-up of this on the Urban eBikes website for all electric bike, motorcycle, moped and scooter laws in the UK, along with driving licence requirements.

The peak power output jumps significantly for the Ultra Bee and Storm Bee bikes, which deliver 12,500W and 22,500W respectively. When combined with their huge torque, 440Nm for the Ultra Bee and 520Nm for the Storm Bee, this makes the Sur-Ron truly electric and absolutely thrilling to ride.

This power drives quick acceleration, a mere 3.6s 0-50 mph for the Storm Bee and a top speed of 68 mph.

This power drives quick acceleration, a mere 3.6s 0-50 mph for the Storm Bee and a top speed of 68 mph. This compares to 56 mph for the Ultra Be and 45 mph for the Light Bee (Light Bee S is 30 mph).

Sur-Ron Bike Battery, Charging Time & Range

The battery in any electric bike is both essential and a burden, it drives the bike, determines the range and charging time but also is burdensome by it’s weight.

The Light Bee has a 60v 32Ah battery, which gives it a range of around 100 km (62 miles). I say around because range isn’t just about the size of the battery, it is also based on riding style – lots of acceleration for instance will reduce the range – weather conditions, terrain, rider weight and other variable factors. The Light Bee battery charges in around 2.5 to 3.5 hours.

The battery on the Ultra Bee increases to 74v 55Ah which helps to deliver a range of 140 km (88 miles) and you can expect a charging time of 4 to 4.5 hours.

The big beast that is the Storm Bee electric bike needs more juice and Sur-Ron oblige with a 90v 55Ah battery. This bigger battery doesn’t provide a bigger range, which is slated at 100 km (62 miles) – same as the Light Bee – but the more powerful Storm Bee needs the bigger battery to deliver the power that exudes from the Storm.
